#weliketoeat – Spicy Taco Seasoning
It’s finally Friday! Woot woot!
So for today’s recipe, I’m taking a slightly different approach. Have you ever read the list of ingredients on a package of Taco Seasoning? I have and it’s quite disturbing. For instance, why do you need citric acid, potato starch, whey or milk? You’re making tacos for goodness sakes! Add in the list of un-pronouncable ingredients and you’ve got a recipe for a whole bunch of yuck!
I’ve never claimed to be a “clean-eater” – I like meat and cheese, and cheese and I’ll try anything once, as long as it’s got cheese on it or in it. However, the more I have started to cook real meals at home, and the more meals or items I make from scratch, the more I realize that I despise fillers and non-necessary ingredients. Hence where the search for a good, natural taco seasoning came from.
Jon loves tacos. Pretty sure he could [and would] eat them everyday if I’d agree to it. He also tends to like things on the spicy side so when I started making a list of what I wanted in my seasoning, I had to take that into account. I’m pretty sure the following recipe is one of my favorites and it’s so, so easy and takes less than five minutes to prepare.
Spicy Taco Seasoning
1 tablespoon chili powder
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1-1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon ground red pepper
1/4 teaspoon adobo
1 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
Mix all ingredients in a bowl and store in an air-tight container.
I usually make a double or triple batch of this at a time. It only takes a few minutes and I like saving time.
I generally use between 1-1/2 -2 tablespoons per pound of ground meat. Like I mentioned above,
we Jon likes things spicy. It certainly has a kick to it, but it is awesome.
If you don’t want it as spicy, you can leave out the adobo and the ground red pepper. I’m pretty sure those two ingredients take it over the top when it comes to spice.
Clearly Jon [and Hercules & Harley] were ready for taco night. Don’t worry, the puppies didn’t actually get tacos, they had a healthy serving of dog food.
Everything in a bowl, pre-mixed.
The set-up for dinner with all the proper taco ingredients. Queso [have I mentioned we like cheese?], lettuce, more cheese, tomatoes, super spicy taco seasoned meat, doritos and [not shown] tortillas, refried beans and taco sauce.
And the best way to enjoy it is in a delicious salad. Ahhh so yummy.
Maybe Jon’s not the only one who could eat tacos everyday. When it’s so colorful and amazingly delicious, I might get on that boat too!
Do you make anything from scratch when it comes to seasoning? What’s your go-to recipe?
Hopefully you’ve got fun plans this weekend. I’ve definitely got some crafty plans lined up. Come back Monday and see what’s inspiring me!
Thanks for stopping by!
